Zach Newcomer officially began his duties as Athletics Communication Director for Simpson College on Jan. 14, 2019 and is responsible for promoting and covering Simpson's 19 varsity sports.
Newcomer joins Simpson after previously serving as the Assistant Sports Information Director at Taylor University. At Taylor, he was assigned to cover men's and women's soccer, men's and women's indoor track and field and softball, and assisted the department with other duties as assigned. Newcomer nominated three student-athletes that were selected as Players of the Weeks during the soccer season within the Crossroads League. Newcomer was an integral part in running Snapchat during Taylor's annual Silent Night event. During the event, over 630,000 people viewed the event on Snapchat worldwide.
Before his arrival to Taylor, Newcomer was a sports writer at the Times-Union newspaper in Warsaw, Ind. While there, he covered seven area high schools and covered Tim Tebow speak at Grace College. His daily tasks involved constructing a portion of the sports section for the six-day paper and then writing recaps over the events he covered the previous night.
Prior to working at the newspaper, Newcomer gained valuable experience in the profession as a graduate intern in the sports media relations department at NCAA Division I Valparaiso University for a year and a half. In his time working in the Crusader athletic department, Newcomer was the contact for men's and women's cross country, swimming and track and field. He also assisted with gameday coverage for home football, basketball, baseball and volleyball contests. Newcomer earned his master's degree in sports media in 2017 from Valparaiso.
Newcomer received his bachelor's of science degree in sports management from Manchester University in 2016. He was a sports information intern during his senior year. While enrolled in several journalism courses, Newcomer wrote for the school newspaper, The Oak Leaves, and won second place (2017) and third place (2015) for Best Sports Page at the Indiana Collegiate Press Association contest.
A native of New Paris, Ind., Newcomer currently resides in Indianola with his wife, Katherine.
